Overnight bike adventure out of DC – Day 1

The summer bike tour with my brother is just around the corner, so I was keen to head out and do a shake-down tour to test my kit. Lexi was a willing companion so earlier this afternoon we packed the panniers and headed out for a quick overnight adventure along the C&O canal.

Despite the late start, it was a beautiful afternoon and evening and with the long hours of daylight we were able to make good progress out of DC. Two punctures slowed us down somewhat but we were still smiling when we reached camp, from where I’m now writing this blog post. Here’s a selection of photos from today:

No Rest Out West: a 3,500-mile summer bike tour around West U.S.

This summer I’m setting off to cycle around the mountainous West of the U.S. with my brother. We have two months and our rough plan is to cycle a big horseshoe route, heading north out of San Francisco late June, up the Pacific Coast of California, then riding up the Sierra Cascades through Oregon and into Washington. From there, we’ll turn right and ride east across Idaho and into Montana until we intersect the Great Divide Mountain Bike route. There, we’ll turn south, pedalling across Montana and Wyoming until we reach the vicinity of Denver, Colorado, where we’ll catch flights home.

Less than two weeks to go and I’m more than a little excited. I’m looking forward to a new adventure with my brother and a chance to hang out together (we live on opposite sides of the world, you see). The scenery promises to be spectacular on every level, from the remote Northern coastline of California, to the volcanoes of Oregon and Washington states, through to the drama and majesty of the Rockies. I’ve never visited the West coast or the West mountains of the U.S., so every day, every mile, will be a new experience. I’m looking forward to sleeping out in a tent again, living the simple life out on the road. I’m looking forward to it all.

I’ve used the maps of the excellent Adventure Cycling Association to create our route, combining their separate routes to create our own Frankenstein version, which consists of five distinct stages:

The plan is to spend our first month on the road section up to Eureka in Montana. That leaves our second month to spend on the Great Divide route, to cover approximately 1,500 miles. This should be achievable and leave us some time for side trips or hopefully some summit hikes. We’ll see!

How did this route evolve? For years my brother and I have dreamt of riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike route together. Separately, I’d been dreaming of seeing the Sierra Cascade mountains and the Pacific Northwest, so we put the two together to come up with this hybrid route. Another factor in our planning is the unbearable heat of the desert in New Mexico mid-August, so it wasn’t a difficult decision to omit this part of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and save it for another trip.

I may do a geeky blog post further down the line detailing all the kit and decisions that went into it, but for now, this little snippet will have to do.

Suffice to say we’re going lightweight on this tour, inspired in no small part by the adventures of the Crane cousins and their ride across the Himalayas to the Centre of the Earth. (Any bike tourers out there – I fully recommend reading their book: it’s a fantastic account of a wild bike adventure, written in that self-deprecating style, favoured by the eccentric, slightly crazy English explorers through the ages.)

As for us, we’re both riding cyclocross bikes with rear panniers only, which should be a good compromise for riding on and off-road. The bikes and gear should be pretty light for this tour, which should translate into more fun on the road.

Regarding photography, this will be the first long trip that I don’t carry an SLR camera. I ummm’d and ahhh’d for ages on this, going round and round in circles weighing the pros and cons of taking or leaving the big camera kit. However, I couldn’t get past the weight of it all, the camera, then lenses, filters etc., it all added up to one big, heavy pile. So, it’s being left at home. I’m taking a compact camera (Canon G16) and my iPhone, both very capable cameras in their own rights, and best of all, light and easily carried so as to be accessible. I’ll be posting photos throughout the trip on my instagram account.

To Sugarloaf Mountain – a Sunday adventure by bike

A great day out on the bike – 92 miles and approx 3,600ft of climbing. I followed the C & O Canal National Historic Park out of Georgetown (Washington, DC) with a couple of energy bars and hard boiled eggs in my cycling jersey. I had no fixed destination, only a vague notion of riding for about 40 miles along the canal towpath before heading home via whatever gravel roads I could find.

The region suffered a huge rainstorm at the end of last week – a solid 24 hours of torrential rain – so the Potomac was running higher than I’ve ever seen it. Both banks were flooded where there is normally woodland. Great trunks and all manner of other debris were barreling down the river. The river was a chocolate brown colour, displaying an angry, menacing power.

The riding was fantastic. The trail was flooded in a couple of places, including one section almost up to my bottom bracket that was around 200 metres long, but the water was only stationary so not in the slightest dangerous. I was forewarned of the flooding by a group of four young cycle tourers at one of the campsites. They were headed in the opposite direction and wondering if the trail was passable into Georgetown. In places the river was actually flowing through the woodland on my left side. Had it been like that across the trail then I would have thought twice about continuing.

Feeling good at mile 42 when I turned off the canal trail, I decided to make an ascent of Sugarloaf Mountain, on account of being so close. This was the third time I’ve ridden up this mountain and back to DC in a day, and it’s still a draw, a prominent objective that’s far enough to make for a challenging ride. It’s a fun climb, about 400 – 500ft climbing over a mile and a half.

From Sugarloaf I turned for home and was able to ride mostly gravel roads for another 15 miles or so. By then, tired legs were starting to make themselves known, but the scarcity of traffic and picturesque scenery meant I was enjoying myself too much to care. The past few months have been pretty hectic and at times stressful, so this day was a much needed reminder that adventure is always there, just outside the front door.

Two cereal bars and two boiled eggs do not fill the stomach of a cyclist with 75 miles in the legs, so in a moment of weakness I succumbed to the wafting smells of greasy food and this was the result:

The final 17 miles of the ride were on familiar stomping grounds so I used up whatever reserves of energy I had left and raced for home. All in all a superb day in the saddle, with all the right ingredients – time immersed in nature, a mountain climb, quiet country roads, fine scenery and a decent physical challenge.

2014 Goals

Ok, so maybe I’m late jumping onto this bandwagon but it’s not going to stop me posting some thoughts on what’s coming up in 2014. If anything January’s ludicrously cold and icy weather, not to mention various dental ailments, have given me plenty of enforced indoor time to think through what I’m hoping to achieve this year.

Mid-March: I have a crazy plan for a certain ride on the same day as the Milan-San Remo race. It’s way too ambitious for my current fitness levels, so there’s only a slim chance I could pull it off but we’ll see. Watch this space.

Mid-April: race the Virginia Rough Roubaix – 114 mile gravel race in Shenandoah

Summer: I’m planning an off-road bike tour – super excited about this one, it’s going to be big, can’t say any more at the moment

Fall: First cyclocross race at the DCCX race (link to the 2013 race). Also, join a local cycling club (with a view to start racing in 2015).

Winter: I want to have a crack at the Rapha Festive 500 (link to the 2013 event).

It’s not going to be easy to fit all of this in – there are other factors at play that are bigger than just my cycling ambitions – but my overriding aim is to have a lot of high quality cycling adventures this year. This post will help keep me accountable. Should I ever find myself wavering in my commitment to these goals, I’d do well to remember the words of Confucius:

When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps – Confucius

New Zealand Part I – The Kepler Track

28 November 2013: We were a party of four (yours truly, my girlfriend Lexi, my brother Pete and his girlfriend Lisa) lacing up our boots and making last-minute adjustments to our backpacks at the start of The Kepler Track, a 60km tramp in Fiordland National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand. Ahead was four days of backpacking through alpine mountains and beech forests, from summits to sandy shores, where we would be bathed in sunshine, battered by wind, and dampened by rain.

Our walk began from the door of our hotel in Te Anau. What better way to start than straight from the breakfast buffet station, no driving, no more procrastinating. We picked up our hut passes at the Doc centre en route, a little way outside Te Anau. The weather forecast looked promising, which was all I was hoping for at this stage. Day Two of the walk was the “alpine” day, when we would spend all day above the treeline, crossing some of the ridges of the Jackson Peaks. As long as the weather permitted us access to the higher mountains, and our walk could proceed as planned, I would be happy. At this stage, all looked good.

The route followed the shore of Lake Te Anau to Brod Bay, with the beautiful Murchison mountains as a backdrop (see the first photo), before beginning a long climb through beech forest, eventually emerging above the treeline and finishing at the Luxmore hut. The sun shone, we sweated our way uphill in shorts and t-shirts, reaching the hut around 5pm. The views that opened up as we emerged from the forest were spectacular, at once justifying the effort needed to reach that point.

The Luxmore hut was pleasant and comfortable (as were all the huts on this walk) when judged by the standards of some prior trips (when we’ve been known to sleep on the snow slopes of Mt Blanc in a blizzard sans tent for example). It’s been a while since my last hut trip (I think the Swiss Alps in 2011?) but, as often at mountain huts, it had a welcoming, convivial atmosphere (although, beware of the “socks-ygen”, as the hut warden Peter informed us, from 30 pairs of fruity hiking socks, that would also be present in the atmosphere if we didn’t open a few windows and ventilate the dormitory that night). I was dog tired at day’s end, but insanely happy to be in the outdoors again.

We woke to a slightly different forecast which, rather unsurprisingly for this region (one of the wettest on earth), predicted rain and stronger winds. No bother we thought! We had all the right gear and it certainly wasn’t too dangerous. We would be just fine, with a dollop or two of old-fashioned stoicism.

“A bit breezy on top, maybe a bit damp too” were the words of the hut warden as we left. Typical understated Kiwi humour. It was indeed a bit breezy (reaching 100km/h we were informed at the next hut!), which made for a rough-and-tumble sort of day and a well-earned dinner. The thick cloud scudded across the sky, revealing, hiding and teasing us with dramatic views of the mountains and lakes all around us. My brother and I made the short detour to climb Mt Luxmore, which was a relatively quick scramble to the summit and tremendous views over Lake Te Anau. We caught up with the girls at the Forest Burn emergency shelter, where we stopped for lunch and enjoyed a brief respite from the rain.

The scenery more than made up for the weather. We felt ALIVE! The elements forced us into the present, the here and now, a coarser, more primitive existence for a day, no bad thing in our modern, tech-obsessed lives. I, for one, would not have traded places with anyone that day.

A series of stepped sections along the final, narrow ridge below the second shelter (the Hanging Valley shelter) felt slightly precarious in the wind, but we were at last safely below the treeline. What a day it had been. We still had several kilometres to go, down through the verdant Fiordland rainforest, where seemingly everything, except the odd twisted tree, was coated with moss.

The second half of the walk, from Iris Burns hut back to Te Anau, was of a different nature to what we had encountered so far. With the mountains behind us, we spent these final two days among the trees, where the landscape was measured in metres, not kilometres. The joy was in the detail, the vividness of the green mosses, the precise geometry of the fern fronds, the stark black of the tree trunks against the white misty backdrop.

Our third and final night on the track was passed at Moturau Hut, on the shores of Lake Manapouri. After a night in the mountains, a night in the forest next to a waterfall, it was fitting to finish with a night on the lakeshore with a sandy beach. After dinner we were treated to a sunset to remember. It began with some incredibly warm light breaking through under the cloud base, which had everyone scampering out of the hut and down to the beach with cameras:

Our fourth and final day of tramping took us from the Moturau Hut all the way back to Te Anau. It was a straightforward day, with little up or down, through forests and along rivers. A mellow day of walking, giving us plenty of time to reflect and scheme up future adventures. The sun was shining and the team were in high spirits as we departed the hut:

After four days, 60km of walking, three huts, two keas, two rare whios (blue ducks), more sunshine than we expected, amazing views and more ferns than you can shake a stick at, we were all too soon back in Te Anau. The walk had passed far too quickly, and I felt sad to be back in civilisation so soon! But we had more adventures planned for this trip (story of a future blog post) and this trek had been a wonderful four days with wonderful people, and for that I will always be grateful.
